Cross-Reinforced Filament Tape for Heavy Box Closure & Splicing

3M 8959 Bi-Directional Filament Tape is a high-strength specialty packaging tape designed for heavy box closure, cross-web splicing, bundling, reinforcing, pallet unitizing, and other demanding industrial packaging applications.

Unlike conventional filament tapes reinforced primarily along their length, 3M 8959 uses continuous glass yarn filaments in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. This bi-directional reinforcement provides strength across the tape as well as along its length, helping resist splitting, tearing, and center-seam failure during shipping and handling.

A clear biaxially oriented polypropylene film backing helps protect the reinforcing filaments and adhesive while providing resistance to abrasion, moisture, and scuffing. The transparent construction allows package graphics, labels, printing, and illustrations to remain visible through the tape.

A pressure-sensitive synthetic rubber resin adhesive provides strong initial adhesion and shear strength with minimal rubdown. The adhesive bonds to a wide variety of common packaging surfaces, including fiberboard, plastics, and metals.

With a total tape thickness of approximately 5.7 mil, 3M 8959 provides dependable reinforcement for heavy box closure and industrial packaging applications. Its bi-directional glass reinforcement is particularly useful for resisting center-seam splitting in regular slotted container (RSC) box closure applications and for cross-web splicing.
